A Month In

About

Who writes these stories, and why the trips take a month instead of a weekend.

I'm Tonko, a traveller based in Croatia. I don't do weekend city breaks to faraway places. When I go somewhere, I stay: three months in West Africa, a month each in Vietnam, Brazil, Colombia and Peru. For the past year I've been living and working in Iraq, travelling the country whenever I get the chance. And back home, I've been turning the same slow attention to Croatia, travelling it the way I'd travel anywhere new.

A month is long enough for the first impressions to wear off. You learn which bus actually leaves on time, where locals eat, what a fair price is, and which "must-see" sights you could have skipped. That's what this site is for.

What you'll find here

  • Long-form stories from Iraq, West Africa, Southeast Asia, South America and Croatia, not listicles
  • Practical detail that only comes from staying a while: getting around, costs, safety, timing
  • Honest notes on where I stayed and whether I'd go back

Every story is based on a trip I took myself. I pay for my own travel, and nobody gets to read a story before it's published.
