Before a long trip
- Vaccinations and health: see a travel clinic well before you go, especially for West Africa, Iraq and the Amazon regions of Brazil, Colombia and Peru.
- Iraq: federal Iraq and the Kurdistan Region have different entry rules, and travel advisories vary by area. Check your government's current advisory and the official entry requirements before every trip.
- Visas: rules change often. Check the official government site for each country, not blogs.
- Money: carry a card with no foreign transaction fees and a backup card kept separately.
- Ferries in Croatia: book directly with Jadrolinija and other operators. Car slots sell out in summer.
